The city of Jhalawar, originally called Chaoni Umedpura, was founded by Jhala Zalim Singh I, the Dewan of Kota, in 1791. Located amidst dense forests teeming with wildlife, the area was initially developed as a military cantonment to counter Maratha invasions en route to Kota. By 1803-04, it had grown into a well-planned township with havelis, large houses, and fortified walls. The strategic vision of Jhala Zalim Singh made this place a key defense point, as noted by Colonel Todd in 1821.

In 1838, the British separated Jhalawar from Kota, making Jhala Madan Singh, Zalim Singh’s grandson, its first ruler. He established The Garh Palace and strengthened the administration. Subsequent rulers like Jhala Prithvi Singh and Rana Bhawani Singh contributed significantly to the state’s development, focusing on social reforms, education, and infrastructure.
