Pratapgarh, the 33rd district of Rajasthan, was established on 26 January 2008 and forms part of the Udaipur Division. It was carved out from the tehsils of Chittorgarh, Udaipur, and Banswara districts. The district headquarters, Pratapgarh town is the second least populated district of Rajasthan as per the 2011 Census, after Jaisalmer. Historically, Pratapgarh was ruled by the Sisodia clan of Mewar, renowned for legendary Rajputs like Maharana Pratap, Rana Sanga, and Maharana Kumbha.

In the 14th century, due to a property dispute, Maharana Kumbha expelled his cousin Kshem Singh. Kshem Singh’s descendants, including Prince Surajmal, later ruled the Kanthal region, establishing Dewaliya (Devgarh) as their capital, near present-day Pratapgarh, which still holds remnants of that era.
