Kanker Court’s history traces back to the early 19th century, when it was initially under Maratha control, conditioned upon providing 500 men for government service. However, in 1809, the chief of Kanker lost his estate, only to be restored in 1818 under British authority. Maharajadhiraj Narhardeo, ascending to power in 1853, governed until 1889, when a Diwan was appointed, overseeing the state’s budget with political agent consultation.

Following Maharajadhiraj Narhardeo’s passing in 1903, his nephew, Lal Komal Deo, succeeded him, receiving a personal salute in 1911. The legal system, managed by Diwan Shri Durga Prashad Tiwari, comprised civil laws codified in the ‘Kanoon-Mal’ and criminal laws based on the British Indian Penal Code and Criminal Procedure Code.

The Kutchery, established in 1932, served as the judicial center until 2006, witnessing the practice of ‘Vakil and Mukhtiyars’ defending parties. After Kanker’s integration into the Union of India, it became part of the Bastar District. The establishment of Bastar Civil District in 1968-69 shifted the District Judge’s seat to Jagdalpur. Kanker was declared a district in 1998, with the civil district inaugurated in 2006, hosting courts for District and Session Judge, ADJ, CJM, and Civil Judge Class-I. Additionally, a Family Court was established in 2013.
