The judicial history of the Surguja district began during the period of the Surguja princely state. After the Third Anglo-Maratha War in 1818, the princely state of Surguja came under the protection of the British Government of India. It is believed that Surguja state had control over the present states of Jashpur, Udaipur (Dharamjaigarh, District-Raigarh), Changabhakhar, and Korea.
The original ruler of the Surguja state had the hereditary title of Maharaja, who had complete administrative and judicial powers. In 1944, on the initiative of the ruler, an advisory committee consisting of three members was established. The kingdom was one of the original constituent members of the Chamber of Princes, which was indirectly represented by 12 princes elected from time to time. In 1940, the Maharaja of Surguja was given entry into his chamber of rights. Evidence of this can be found at the main entrance of the local collector’s building, where an inscription shows that a Joint High Court building was available here, constructed in 1936 when the district was under the Central Provinces and Berar State. . The ruler also served as the judge presiding over the court.
The present building of District and Sessions Court Surguja is situated near Gandhi Chowk in Ambikapur. District and Sessions Court Surguja was established in 1969. Before 1969, the district was under the jurisdiction of the District and Sessions Judge, Raigarh (CG). Shri S.P. Khare was the first District and Sessions Judge of Surguja (CG), who assumed charge on 17 January 1969.
