Immersed in antiquity, Tarn Taran traces its origins back to the era of the fifth Sikh Guru, Shri Guru Arjan Dev ji (1563-1606). He established this city in 1596 with the noble aim of serving the people, marking a significant milestone with the founding of the revered Shri Tarn Taran Sahib Temple. During the period from 1716 to 1810, Tarn Taran Sahib was under the governance of the Bhangi Misl, a prominent Sikh family of the Dhillon clan.
In 1947, during the Partition of India and Punjab, Tarn Taran stood out as the sole tehsil (district) in Punjab, alongside Shiekhupura, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, Amritsar, Lyallpur, and Patiala, with a predominant Sikh population.
Guru Sahib envisioned this city as a hub of welfare, pioneering initiatives such as the treatment of leprosy patients. This noble endeavor was furthered by the establishment of the Leprosy Home by the Church Missionary Society in 1885.
Tarn Taran serves as a cornerstone of Sikh culture, boasting numerous historical Gurdwaras. The abundance of such significant Gurdwaras in the Majha region solidifies its status as a historic Sikh center, drawing pilgrims and enthusiasts alike. Among the notable Gurdwaras in the city are Darbar Sahib Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji, Gurdwara Guru Ka Khuh (Gurdwara of the Guru’s Well), Gurdwara Bibi Bhani Da Khuh, Gurdwara Takkar Sahib, Gurdwara Lakeer Sahib, Gurudwara Baba Garja Singh Baba Bota Singh, Gurdwara Jhulne Mahal, and Thatti Khara.
