Allahabad High Court Recruitment 2024 (eCourts.gov.in) New Notification

The Allahabad High Court, also known as the High Court of Judicature at Allahabad, holds authority over the state of Uttar Pradesh in India. Established on 17 March 1866, it stands as the fourth high court instituted in the country. The inception of this court was facilitated by the Indian High Courts Act of 1861, which aimed to replace the Supreme Courts of Calcutta, Madras, and Bombay, and to establish High Courts in their stead. Additionally, the act allowed for the creation of a High Court through Letters Patent in regions not already under the jurisdiction of another High Court.

In 1866, the High Court of Judicature for the North-Western Provinces was inaugurated in Agra under the Letters Patent of 17 March 1866, effectively replacing the Sudder Diwanny Adawlat. Sir Walter Morgan, Barrister-at-Law, and Mr. Simpson assumed the roles of the first Chief Justice and Registrar, respectively. The court’s location shifted to Allahabad in 1869, and in 1919, a supplementary Letters Patent changed its designation to ‘the High Court of Judicature at Allahabad.’

The Oudh Chief Court at Lucknow, established on 2 November 1925, replaced the Oudh Judicial Commissioner’s Court, governed by the Oudh Civil Courts Act, IV of 1925. The Uttar Pradesh High Court Amalgamation Order of 1948 merged the Chief Court of Oudh with the High Court of Allahabad, preserving their respective jurisdictions. The States Merger (United Provinces) Order, of 1949, further transferred powers from specified Indian states to the Governors’ Provinces, affecting Rampur, Benaras, and Tehri Garhwal.

On 26 January 1950, coinciding with the Republic Day celebrations and the commencement of the Indian Constitution, the High Court of Judicature at Allahabad attained jurisdiction over the entire state of Uttar Pradesh. However, the Uttar Pradesh Reorganisation Act, of 2000, led to the creation of the State of Uttaranchal and its High Court, resulting in the High Court at Allahabad losing jurisdiction over 13 districts in Uttaranchal. Currently, the High Court of Judicature at Allahabad has a sanctioned strength of 160 Judges.
