Haveri district, along with Gadag district, was previously part of the undivided Dharwad District. Responding to public demand, this district was created from the former Dharwad District on 24 August 1997.

Haveri is located on the Poona-Bangalore National Highway No.4. Positioned at the heart of Karnataka, Haveri District is equidistant from Bidar in the far north to Kollegal in the far south, earning its title as the gateway district to north Karnataka. The district boasts a rich cultural heritage and is the birthplace of revered saints like Shishuvinahala Sharifaru, Kanakadasaru, Sarvagnya, Hangal Kumara Shivayogigalu, Wagish Panditaru, Writer Galaganataru, Ganayogi Panchakshari Gavaigalu, Gnanapeeta Awardee V.K. Gokak, and many others. Haveri town is 330 KM from Bangalore.
The city is well-connected by road and railway. The population of Haveri District exceeds 14,39,116, with around 3 lakh residing in urban areas. Agriculture is the primary occupation in the rural areas, with crops like chilly, cotton, jowar, and groundnut dominating. Irrigation is facilitated by the Tungabhadra River. Ranibennur is the largest city in Haveri and serves as a commercial hub.

Byadgi hosts the largest chilly market, while Haveri is renowned for its cardamom trade.
