Originally, the former Judgeship of Goalpara District, encompassing the present Districts of Dhubri, Goalpara, Kokrajhar, and Bongaigaon with its headquarters in Dhubri, was under the jurisdiction of the District and Sessions Judge of Lower Assam District (L-A-D) headquartered in Guwahati until the end of 1966. During that time, there was a sub-judge court in Dhubri.
In the early part of 1967, the Judgeship of Goalpara was established with its headquarters in Dhubri. At that time, the Districts of Dhubri, Goalpara, Kokrajhar, and Bongaigaon fell under the jurisdiction of the Goalpara Judgeship in Dhubri.
In 1981-82, the erstwhile Goalpara District was politically and administratively divided into separate districts – Dhubri, Goalpara, Kokrajhar, and Bongaigaon. After this division, all the districts of Goalpara, Bongaigaon, and Kokrajhar temporarily functioned judicially under the Dhubri Judgeship for a few years until the government bifurcated them judicially under the Judicial Department, Assam. Eventually, in accordance with the government’s order, the Kokrajhar and Goalpara Judgeships were established in the latter part of 1984 and the first part of 1985 respectively.
Later, in 1986, the Bongaigaon Judgeship was established. Thus, the four Judgeships of Dhubri, Goalpara, Kokrajhar, and Bongaigaon are now functioning independently, although they were once under the Goalpara Judgeship headquartered in Dhubri.
The Court of Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate (SDJM) for the Bilasipara subdivision was opened in 2002, and the court of Munsiff-cum-Judicial Magistrate was opened in August 2007, both of which are now operating smoothly.
The courts of SDJM and Munsiff-cum-Judicial Magistrate for Hatsingimari Sub-Division were opened in January 2016, and they are also functioning smoothly.
