Jorhat Court Recruitment 2024 (eCourts.gov.in) New Notification

The Jorhat District, deriving its name from the combination of “jor” meaning twin and “hat” meaning market in Assamese, signifies the presence of two bustling markets or mandis – “Macharhat” and “Chowkihat.” These markets were situated on opposite banks of the Bhogdoi River. In the 18th century, Jorhat served as the final capital of the Ahom Kingdom, meticulously planned under royal patronage. It was also referred to as “Jorehaut” during the British colonial era. In 1794, King Gaurinath Singha of the Ahom dynasty relocated the capital from Sibsagar to Jorhat.

The Ahom rulers constructed several tanks around the capital, such as Rajmao Pukhuri, Borpukhuri, Buragohain Pukhuri, Bolia Gohain Pukhuri, Kotoki Pukhuri, and Mitha Pukhuri. Unfortunately, the town, once a thriving commercial hub, fell victim to successive Burmese invasions between 1817 and the arrival of the British forces in 1824, led by David Scott and Captain Richard.

In the early years of British rule, notable revolutionaries like Gomdhar Konwar, Jeuram Medhi, and Piyali Phukan emerged. The British administrative system took root in 1839 with the establishment of a Police Thana. During the Sepoy Mutiny, Maniram Dewan and Piyali Barua faced public execution in 1858.

The year 1885 marked the commencement of the Jorehaut Provincial Railway, a narrow-gauge railway that played a pivotal role in the rapid growth of the tea industry.
