The Golaghat District lies between 26 degrees and 27 degrees North latitude and 93 degrees to 94 degrees 17 minutes East longitude, with a population of 9,46,279 according to the 2001 census, comprising 4,90,286 males and 4,55,993 females. It consists of three subdivisions: Golaghat, Dhansiri with its headquarters at Sarupathar, and Bokakhat. The renowned Kaziranga National Park is located about 70 kilometers from the District Headquarters, falling under the jurisdiction of the Bokakhat Civil Sub-Division.
The Numaligarh Refinery, a significant outcome of the long-standing Assam agitation, is situated just 27 kilometers away from the District Headquarters. The Vaishnavite monastery known as Athkhelia Namghar is merely 16 kilometers east of the Headquarters. The District is surrounded by picturesque hills, waterfalls, and Artesian wells like Garam Pani to its southern side, which attract tourists not only from within the country but also from abroad.
A new milestone was achieved in the services of the Golaghat District Judiciary on a humble Wednesday, the 23rd of July 2014. The Bokakhat Sub-Divisional Court was inaugurated by Honorable Mr. Justice Abhay Manohar Sapre, Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, on 23-07-2014. Mr. Raktim Duarah (Registrar Admin.) and Mr. Kuntal Sarma Pathak (Joint Registrar(PM&P)) also graced the occasion. Despite lacking its own building, Golaghat is an exquisite area. A new Six-Storied building for the Higher Judiciary has been sanctioned for construction, which will house all the Headquarters Courts and offices of the Golaghat District Judiciary.
Currently, there are 14 Judicial Courts in Golaghat District, serving a population of 9,46,279 with a literacy rate of 69.38% as per the 2001 census.
