Little is known about the area before the 16th century. Korea was a princely state of the British Empire in India. Another princely state within the Korea district was Chang Bhakar. After Indian Independence in 1947, the rulers of Korea and Chang Bhakar acceded to the Union of India on 1 January 1948, and both became part of the Surguja District in the state of Madhya Pradesh.
The district of Korea was established on 25 May 1998, when it was separated from Surguja district. After the formation of the new state of Chhattisgarh on 1 November 2000, Korea District became part of it. Currently, it is part of the Red Corridor, and as a civil district, Korea came into existence on 8 October 2006.
