Rajnandgaon City likely didn’t exist when G.E.Road No. 6 was built by the Bhonsle rulers. Britishers connected G.E. Road from Nagpur to West Bengal for their convenience. Some businessmen from “Kamptee” settled in Rajnandgaon during that time. Rajnandgaon state was established in 1830 when a Zamindar named Bairagi Vaishnava Mahant brought the capital there. Initially ruled by a Bairagi, the state got its name from its ruler’s devotion to Lord Krishna, hence called Nandgaon. Later, it was named Rajnandgaon because there was a railway station named Nandgaon in the “Great Indian Peninsula,” and it was a state ruled by a king.
Rajnandgaon merged into the Union of India on 1st January 1948. The last ruler, Mahant Digvijaydas, passed away on 22nd January 1958. Until 26th January 1973, Rajnandgaon was under the Revenue District Durg. Rajnandgaon Revenue District was established on 26th January 1973. Before that, Civil District Raipur included both Rajnandgaon and Durg.
On 1st April 1948, Civil District Raipur was divided, and Civil District Durg at Rajnandgaon was established. Shri P.V. Lele served as the first District & Sessions Judge in 1948. Due to increasing litigation, more Civil Districts were formed. Rajnandgaon was declared a Civil District on 10th April 1975, and it came into existence on 12th April 1975. Shri S. Sanyal became its first District & Sessions Judge.
After the formation of Civil District Kabirdham, Rajnandgaon had 4 outlying tahsils. The Link Court of Civil Judge Class I began in 1992, and a regular Court of Civil Judge Class I was established in 1994. Cases from tahsils Mohla, Manpur, Ambagarh Chowki, and police stations Ambagarh Chowki, Mohla, Manpur, and Aundhi are filed in the Court of Civil Judge Class I and Judicial Magistrate First Class Ambagarh Chowki.
