Mungeli gained the status of a tehsil in 1860. Thus, after 142 years, it was converted from a tehsil to a district. The new district consists of three tehsils: Mungeli, Patharia, and Lormi. The total area of the district is 1 lakh 63 thousand 942 square kilometers. There are many religious and tourist places in Mungeli district, where a major fair is organized every year.

It is believed that Triptagamani Ganga had instructed the Phaninagavanshi king in a dream to establish a kund (pond) and a temple through excavation. Following these instructions, a pond and a temple were constructed in Setganga. The water of the pond was as cold as the Ganga, hence it was named White Ganga. With time it came to be known colloquially as Sinaganga. Situated on the banks of Tesua, this place is famous as a pilgrimage site in the Mungeli district.
