Sangrur was once the capital of the former Jind State, with Raja Raghbir Singh making it his residence. He ascended to the position of Chief of State on 31 March 1874. It was under his patronage that a picturesque town emerged, featuring a bazaar modeled after the renowned pink city of Jaipur, complete with sturdy shops. During that era, the city boasted gates, temples, and Gurudwaras on each of its four corners. At the time of independence, Raja Ranbir Singh ruled over Jind State, which later became part of the Pepsu State before being designated as a district in 1948.
Sangrur District derives its name from its headquarters, Sangrur city, which is surrounded by Ludhiana, Moga, Bathinda, and Patiala districts of Punjab, along with Hisar district of Haryana. It enjoys direct road links with Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Bathinda, and Delhi, and lies along the Ludhiana-Jakhal railway track. Administratively, Sangrur District is divided into four Tehsils: Sunam, Moonak, Dhuri, and Malerkotla, with Malerkotla now being a separate district solely on the administrative front.
Each subdivision in Sangrur has its unique history and significance. Sunam, previously the district headquarters of Patiala State, transitioned into a Sub Tehsil after the partition. Dhuri, known for its judicial courts established around 1910, serves as another pivotal center. Malerkotla, once a separate Mohammaden Pathan State, retains its historical charm and is renowned for its significant role during various historical events, including its protests against injustice and its peaceful coexistence between different religious communities. Similarly, Moonak holds significance as the birthplace of Babu Brish Bhan Ji, a prominent freedom fighter and political leader who championed the rights of small farmers.
