SAS Nagar District was established on 14 April 2006, as the 18th District of Punjab, carved out from areas of Ropar and Patiala Districts. It is named after Sahibzada Ajit Singh, the eldest son of Guru Gobind Singh, hence commonly referred to as SAS Nagar, or “House of Sahibzada Ajit Singh”. Situated adjacent to the union territory of Chandigarh, the district aims to foster development, especially in the realm of information technology, emerging as a major hub in Northern India.
Comprising Mohali, Kharar, and Dera Bassi Tehsils, the district is located in the northeastern part of Punjab, falling under the Patiala division. With 414 villages, key townships include Kharar, Kurali, Mohali, Zirakpur, and Dera Bassi. Notably, 27 villages were newly added from District Patiala to SAS Nagar.
The District and Sessions Court Mohali, formerly a subdivision of Rupnagar Sessions Division, was established in 2006 with limited infrastructure. Inaugurated formally by Acting Chief Justice Sh. H.S. Bedi on July 23, 2006, the court initially operated from the Phase 3-B1 community center. Over time, it expanded, with the inauguration of Mohali’s first District court by former Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice Vijender Jain on 18 March 2008. In 2015, a new Judicial Courts Complex was inaugurated, featuring advanced facilities and eco-friendly design, enhancing the judiciary’s efficiency and accessibility for both the public and officials.
Ms. Archana Puri assumed the role of the First District and Sessions Judge, overseeing the relocation of all courts to the new complex, equipped with modern amenities like video conferencing, air-conditioned courtrooms, and CCTV surveillance. Despite its current distance from the city center, the complex is strategically positioned to accommodate Mohali’s rapid urban growth, ensuring optimal service delivery for years to come.
