The Punjab and Haryana High Court serves as the common High Court for the Indian states of Punjab and Haryana, along with the Union Territory of Chandigarh, situated in Chandigarh. Nestled in the northern region of India, at an elevation of 365 meters above sea level, lies the picturesque city known as ‘Chandigarh’. Serving as the capital for both Punjab and Haryana, Chandigarh, despite its dual status, is designated as a Union Territory.
Before India’s partition on 15 August 1947, the regions now comprising Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, certain parts of Himachal Pradesh, and areas in West Pakistan constituted Punjab, with Lahore as its capital. Following partition, Lahore became part of Pakistan, necessitating the establishment of a new capital for Indian Punjab. In March 1948, the Punjab Government, in consultation with the Indian Government, approved a 114.59 sq. km. land parcel in the Ambala district, situated at the foothills of the Shivalik Hills, for the new capital.
Renowned French architect Le Corbusier was commissioned to spearhead the project. India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, ardently supported the endeavor, envisioning Chandigarh as a symbol of India’s post-independence aspirations. He christened the new capital Chandigarh, symbolizing the resilient spirit of the Punjabi people.
As the administrative hub for both states, Chandigarh houses the headquarters of Punjab and Haryana. Tourists flock from across India and the globe to marvel at its architectural marvels, including the Zakir Rose Garden, Rock Garden, and Sukhna Lake. Furthermore, Chandigarh hosts the Punjab and Haryana High Court, situated in Sector 1 of the city.
