The Court of the District & Sessions Judge, Kamrup, was set up in 1920. Its jurisdiction originally covered the former Nagaon District in the East and Dhubri District in the West. Mr. A. Merror Esquire, ICS, served as the inaugural District & Sessions Judge of the Assam Valley. Following independence, Mr. I. Rashul took charge as the first District & Sessions Judge of Kamrup. Previously, the District’s jurisdiction encompassed three sub-divisions: Guwahati, Pragjyotishpur, and Rangia. However, it has recently been limited to the Kamrup Metro District alone. The District Judge & Chief Judicial Magistrate’s establishment comprises 24 courts staffed by Judicial Officers of various ranks.
