Udaipur holds significant importance as a sub-division in the state of Tripura, dating back to the days when Tripura was a princely state, serving as its capital. The famous Tripureshwari Temple, also known as “Matabari”, and the historic Bhuvaneshwari Temple have enriched the cultural and religious essence of Udaipur. During the 17th and 18th centuries of the Christian era, Udaipur served as the capital of the Kingdom of Tripura. Picturesque lakes like Amar Sagar, Dhani Sagar, and Jagannath Dighi reflect the royal ambiance of the city. Presently, Udaipur serves as the headquarters of the Gomti Judicial District, formerly known as the South Tripura Judicial District. South Tripura District Judiciary (now Gomti District) was established on 10 February 1981 by Shri B.K. It was formed under the chairmanship of with its headquarters in Udaipur. Bhattacharjee was first appointed as District and Sessions Judge. The Gomti Judicial District began operations on 18 September 2014, with Shri Ashish Pal serving as its inaugural District and Sessions Judge. Additionally, there is a Judicial Court complex at Amarpur under the Gomti Judicial District.
Udaipur has always been a favorite destination for tourists due to its natural beauty and the religious significance of the Tripureshwari Temple established by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya in 1501 AD. Tripureshwari Temple is one of the 51 “Shakti Peethas” in the Indian subcontinent and attracts people. A notable gathering of devotees on the day of “Diwali”.
Bhuvaneshwari Temple is another major site closely associated with the historical palace intrigues involving members of the royal family, as depicted in Rabindranath Tagore’s famous “Bisharjan”, which attracts both devotees and curiosities.
Following the establishment of the South Tripura district with its headquarters at Belonia, the Gomti judicial district now consists of three subdivisions, namely Udaipur, Amarpur, and Karbuk.
