The Tis Hazari Courts Complex, located in Tis Hazari, was officially inaugurated on 19 March 1958, by Chief Justice Mr. A.N. Bhandari of the then Punjab High Court. Serving as one of the six District Courts under the jurisdiction of the Delhi High Court, it remains the primary court building in Delhi.
Initially established under the Punjab High Court, Tis Hazari Courts Complex held significance as the principal court complex in Delhi, which at the time comprised a single district. Over time, court functions were decentralized, leading to the establishment of other complexes. Presently, the complex houses courts with jurisdiction over Central Delhi and West Delhi.
The name “Tis Hazari” traces back to its historical significance. In 1783, a force of 30,000 Sikhs, led by military general Baghel Singh, camped in this area before the Battle of Delhi. Under Baghel Singh’s leadership, they captured Saharanpur and overran the territory of Najib ud-Daulah, acquiring significant tribute. Baghel Singh set up an octroi-post near Sabzi Mandi to collect taxes for constructing Sikh Temples, demonstrating his commitment to community welfare. This historical context enriches the significance of Tis Hazari Courts Complex in Delhi’s legal landscape.
