District Kishtwar was established as an independent administrative unit on 1 April 2007. Nestled 235 km away from the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir, Kishtwar town serves as the district headquarters. Renowned as the ‘Land of Sapphire and Saffron’, Kishtwar boasts abundant forest resources. Surrounded by District Anantnag and District Doda, it also shares boundaries with Himachal Pradesh.
Being one of the newly formed districts of Jammu and Kashmir, Kishtwar stood as the third least populous district in the state as per the 2011 census, following Kargil and Leh. Its name is derived from “Kishat Rishi,” an ancient sage who resided in the region, with its modified version being Kishaswar. Mentioned in ancient texts like the Rajatarangini, Kishtwar’s history dates back to the empire of Raja Kalsa of Kashmir. The district’s picturesque landscape, enveloped by the Himalayas and featuring valleys like Marwah-Warwan, Paddar, and Chhatroo, is adorned with dense forests of deodar, fir, and pine.
Having merged with the State of Jammu and Kashmir in 1821, Kishtwar evolved from being a Tehsil of District Udhampur to becoming part of the newly created District Doda in 1948 during the post-independence reorganization of the state.
