Established in 1963, Kathua District is a vital administrative unit in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Divided into 6 Talukas – Mahanpur, Bani, Basholi, Billawar, Hiranagar, and Kathua – the district hosts 12 courts catering to its diverse population. Sri. M.K Tickoo was the inaugural District & Sessions Judge of Kathua. The district judiciary boasts a team of 12 judicial officers and approximately 100 staff members.
Surrounded by Jammu to the northwest, and sharing boundaries with Doda and Udhampur districts to the north, Himachal Pradesh to the east, Punjab to the south, and Pakistan’s working boundary to the west, Kathua occupies a strategic location. Though its detailed history remains undocumented, local belief suggests that Kathua traces its roots back nearly 2,000 years when Jodh Singh, a Rajput of the Andotra clan, migrated from Hastinapur and settled here. His descendants, including Teju, Kindal, and Bhaju, established the hamlets of Taraf Tajwal, Taraf Manjali, and Taraf Bhajwal, respectively, giving rise to the Tajwalia, Bhajwalia, and Khanwalia Rajputs. Over time, the amalgamation of these hamlets led to the formation of “Kathai,” eventually evolving into Kathua.
