Visakhapatnam, a coastal port city often referred to as “The Jewel of the East Coast,” is situated in the state of Andhra Pradesh on the eastern shoreline of India. According to historical accounts, the city derives its name from the god of Valor, Vishakha. It was part of the Kalinga Kingdom under Ashoka’s rule in 260 B.C. and later came under the Andhra Kings of Vengi. Subsequently, it was ruled by the Pallava, Chola, and Ganga dynasties. In the 15th century, Visakhapatnam became part of the Vijayanagar Empire. Renowned for its tourism attractions, the city boasts lakes, pristine beaches, picturesque hill ranges, and captivating caves and valleys, making it a favored destination in Andhra Pradesh, showcasing the rich culture and heritage of India.
Established in 1931, the District Court of Visakhapatnam comprises 79 courts, including 21 District Courts, 21 Senior Civil Judge Courts, 27 Junior Civil Judge Courts, and 10 Special Magistrate Courts. The Visakhapatnam district judiciary is supported by a distinguished Bar Association with approximately 5,000 advocates in the headquarters and an equivalent number in the rural courts, making it the second-largest Bar Association in Andhra Pradesh. Eminent figures like Sri D.V. Suba Rao, former Chairman of the Bar Council of India, and Sri Tenneti Viswanadham, a revered freedom fighter, have been associated with this esteemed institution.
