The present Una District, until 1 November 1966, was one of the Tehsils of the Hoshiarpur District of Punjab. Following the reorganization of Punjab, all hill areas, including Una Tehsil, were transferred to Himachal Pradesh. From then until September 1972, it remained a Tehsil of the Kangra District. On 1st September 1972, the Himachal Pradesh Government reorganized the Kangra District into three districts: Una, Hamirpur, and Kangra. A permanent court of Sub Judge, Una, was established under the District & Sessions Judge, Hoshiarpur, Punjab, starting in 1935. Following the reorganization of districts in Himachal Pradesh, there was one District and Sessions Judge for Una and Hamirpur Districts from 1 September 1972 to 31 December 1984. The Court of District & Sessions Judge for Una District was created from 1 January 1985 onwards.
Currently, Una District consists of four sub-divisions: Una, Amb, Bangana, and Haroli. There are 11 courts in District Una, including 8 courts at the district headquarters, which includes 3 appellate courts, 5 subordinate courts at Una District Headquarters (also, the Additional District & Sessions Judge-II Una holds Circuit Court at Amb Sub Division for one week every month), and 3 courts at the sub-divisional headquarters at Amb. Additionally, a District Consumer Redressal Forum in Una District is also functioning.
Furthermore, the District and Sessions Judge Una also serves as the Chairman of the District Legal Services Authority, Una HP, which provides various schemes through the Mediation Center, Front Office, and Legal Aid Clinic, and also organizes Quarterly Lok Adalats as well as National Lok Adalats. A Judicial officer has also been appointed as Secretary to the District Legal Services Authority Una, HP, to implement various Schemes of the National Legal Services Authority and HP State Legal Services Authority.
