In the year 1991, the District & Sessions Division in Manipur, which had legal authority over the entire state, was split into two: District & Sessions Division, Manipur East, and District & Sessions Division, Manipur West. The District & Sessions Court in Manipur East had jurisdiction over the Imphal East district including Jiribam sub-division, Imphal West, and Ukhrul District. By an Order dated 16 May 2015, marked No. 2/62/2016-Leg/L, issued by the Law and Legislative Affairs Department, Government of Manipur, on behalf of the Governor of Manipur, the District & Sessions Court, Manipur East was renamed District & Sessions Court, Imphal East. It retained jurisdiction over Imphal East district including Jiribam sub-division and Ukhrul District.
The jurisdiction over the Imphal West district was transferred to the newly named Imphal West District & Sessions Court as per the same order.
Upon the establishment of the Court of the District & Sessions Judge, Ukhrul on 16 January 2016, and by Notification No. 2/62/2012-Leg/L, dated 14 January 2016, issued by the Law and Legislative Affairs Department, Government of Manipur, on behalf of the Governor of Manipur, jurisdiction over Ukhrul district, previously under the District & Sessions Court, Manipur East, was transferred to the newly formed District & Sessions Court, Ukhrul.
Currently, the territorial jurisdiction of District & Sessions Court, Imphal East covers the Imphal East district including the Jiribam sub-division, and it operates with five courts:
1. Court of Additional District & Sessions Judge, Fast Track Court, Manipur East
2. Court of Civil Judge, Senior Division, Imphal East
3. Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal East
4. Court of JMFC/CJJD, Imphal East
5. Court of JMFC/CJJD, Jiribam
