Tawang is a town and administrative headquarters of Tawang District in the Indian State of Arunachal Pradesh. Tawang is situated 448 km northwest of the state capital Itanagar at an elevation of approximately 3,048 meters (10,000 ft). It lies to the north of the Tawang Chu River valley, roughly 10 miles (16 km) south of the Line of Actual Control with China. It is the site of a famous Gelugpa Buddhist Monastery. The Tawang district occupies an area of 2,172 square kilometers. It was carved out of the West Kameng District, which adjoins it to the east. Bhutan borders Tawang to the west and south, and Tibet lies to the north of the district. The district has a population of 49,977 (as per the 2011 Census), almost 75% of whom are considered “tribal”, i.e., belonging to the native Monpa and others. The sensitivity of the border area brings Tawang under heavy military presence. In winter, Tawang frequently experiences heavy snowfall.

The Tawang Monastery was founded by the Merak Lama Lodre Gyatso in 1681 by the wishes of the 5th Dalai Lama, Ngawang Lobsang Gyatso, and has a legend surrounding its name. Ta means “horse” and wang means “chosen”. So, the word Tawang means “chosen by horse”. According to legend, the Monastery is believed to have been chosen by a horse owned by Mera Lama Lodre Gyatso. The sixth Dalai Lama, Tsangyng Gyatso, was born in Tawang.

The district is administered by the Deputy Commissioner-cum-District Magistrate who was previously vested with dual power of executive and judicial roles. The Deputy Commissioner was also the District and Session Judge-cum-Chief Judicial Magistrate. However, with Notification No. JUD/DCS-37/2010 dated 6 January 2016 of the Government of Arunachal Pradesh, the judiciary was formally separated from the executive. Thus, the Judicial Courts of Arunachal Pradesh were created, and the Judicial Magistrate First Class-cum-Civil Judge (Junior Division) is located in Tawang.
