The Upper Subansiri district was established in the year 1980. The district gets its name from the Subansiri River, which flows across its entirety. It shares its northern border, known as the McMahon Line, with China. It stands as the 4th largest district in terms of land area.
The District Court was inaugurated by then Governor of the state, S. N. Dwivedy, on 5th December 1991. The Court was initially overseen by District Administrators and Officers. Shri Domo Padu served as the first Judicial Magistrate First Class cum Civil Judge (Jr. Division) to preside over the court, starting from 2 February 2014.
