Krishna is the administrative district of the state of Andhra Pradesh, with Machilipatnam as the administrative headquarters and Vijayawada as the most populous city in the state. The history of this region dates back to the second century B.C., ruled by Satavahanas, Pallavas, Chalukyas, and later by Cholas, Kakatiyas, the Reddy Dynasty, and the Gajapathi kings of Orissa. The district was named after the river Krishna, the third longest river in India, which flows through it before emptying into the Bay of Bengal near Hamsaladeevi. The district is also renowned for its spirituality, being blessed with the goddess Kanakadurga on the banks of the river Krishna in Vijayawada.

Krishna Court

Originally, in 1802, the provincial court of appeal with both original and appellate jurisdiction over the territory covered by all the 13 districts in the present state of Andhra Pradesh was established in Machilipatnam. In 1873, the Zilla Court was designated as the District Court on the civil side and the Court of Sessions on the criminal side. According to records, the present Principal District and Sessions Court, Machilipatnam, was established in 1882 after being re-designated, and the Bar Association of Machilipatnam came into existence along with the District Court in the same year. The present District Court building was constructed by William Augustus Jobin, and the District Court has been operating in the same building since its establishment in 1802.

Currently, 105 courts are functioning in the entire district. Among them, 23 are District Courts, 22 are Senior Civil Judge’s Courts, and 33 are Junior Civil Judge’s Courts, along with 6 Special Magistrate Courts, 1 Secretary, DLSA, 1 Chairman, Permanent Lok Adalat, and 19 Special Judicial Magistrate of II-Class Courts, located in 21 various Court Complexes. The Krishna District has also made notable contributions to the judiciary. Many eminent advocates from the district have been selected as judicial officers in the state judiciary. Some advocates from the district have also served as District Judges and later elevated as Judges to the High Court and Supreme Court.
