Khowai is situated on a plain on the banks of the Khowai River. Therefore, the district as well as the headquarters town is named after the river. Both Bengali and Kokborok languages have a significant presence in Khowai. The sub-division has now been made a district called “Khowai”. All district regulatory offices will start operations in the town of Khowai district. The new district consists of two sub-divisions, Khowai and Teliamura, with a total area of 1378.28 square kilometers.
The District Court was inaugurated on 31 July 2018. It has the courts of District and Sessions Judge, Chief Judicial Magistrate-cum-Civil Judge (Senior Division), Judicial Magistrate First Class-cum-Civil Judge (Junior Division), and Civil Judge (Junior Division)-cum. -Judicial Magistrate First Class. Additionally, District and Sessions Judges preside over special courts like NDPS Special Court, POCSO Special Court, and other tribunals and courts.
Khowai also hosts a Juvenile Justice Board, consisting of a Civil Judge (Junior Division)-cum-Judicial Magistrate serving as Principal Magistrate of the First Class. The Sub-Divisional Legal Services Committee oversees the legal service functions in the district.
