Tripura, a prominent state in North-East India, boasts a rich history as a princely realm dating back to ancient times. The ‘Rajmala’ documents mention a lineage of 184 kings from the Manikya dynasty who ruled the state. However, historians regard the pre-fifteenth-century rulers as more mythological figures, with the Manikya dynasty consolidating its influence from 1432 onwards.
Post-independence, Tripura joined the Indian Union on 15 October 1949, initially classified as a “C” category state and later becoming a Union Territory in November 1956. It finally attained full statehood on 21 January 1972, transitioning from a single-district entity.
Since 1978, the State Government has implemented various initiatives to strengthen democratic principles, notably through the introduction of a 3-tier Panchayati Raj system, empowering villagers to elect their representatives democratically.
Tripura, once a single-district entity, now comprises eight districts, twenty-three subdivisions, and fifty-eight blocks. Additionally, it hosts an Autonomous District Council (ADC) for tribals, operating under the 6th schedule of the Indian Constitution, representing roughly one-third of the state’s population. The Sepahijala District, inaugurated in 2011, adds to the administrative landscape, characterized by a diverse terrain and a harmonious blend of religious and cultural practices among its communities.
