Dharmanagar is a district town and a municipal council in the northeast of India, located in the North Tripura district of Tripura state. Most of the known history of Dharmanagar comes from the ancient Rajmala scripts, and the royal histories of the kings of Tripura, dating back to the 14th century. The origin of the name ‘Dharmanagar’ remains unclear. The Rajmala mentions at least four ancient kings whose names contain the word ‘Dharma’. Dharmanagar is famous for its natural beauty.
The city is located in the western part of Tripura state. Presently, Dharmanagar is bordered by Maulvi Bazaar of Sylhet, Bangladesh to the north, Karimganj district of Assam to the east, Mizoram state to the south, and Kailashahar of Unakoti district to the west. North Tripura district has many tourist attractions such as Rowa Wildlife Sanctuary and Jampui Hills.
Jampui Hills are famous for their natural beauty, climate, and orange groves. The prestigious Kalibari is situated in the heart of Dharmanagar. Dharmanagar experiences pleasant weather most of the year. The nearest airport to Dharmanagar is at Silchar, and Agartala is further away. Helicopter services, daily bus services, and train services connect the city with the state capital. Presently, Dharmanagar serves as the headquarters of the North Tripura Judicial District.
The Court of District and Sessions Judge of North Tripura at Dharmanagar was inaugurated by Hon’ble Shri Justice Deepak Gupta, Chief Justice of Tripura High Court on 20 October 2014. Additionally, there are judicial courts in the Kanchanpur sub-division under the North Tripura judicial district.
