Srinagar Court Recruitment 2024 (eCourts.gov.in) New Notification

From 1819 to 1846, Maharaja Ranjeet Singh maintained the existing Judicial System, preserving laws and customs within his territories. During this period, the Qazi remained the head of the State Judiciary. In 1846, Sikh rule ended, and the British transferred the State to Maharaja Gulab Singh under the Treaty of Lahore. This treaty granted Gulab Singh independent sovereignty. Subsequently, he established himself as the ultimate authority of justice, instituting a system where cases could be heard upon the presentation of a “NAZRANA” of Rs 1/-.

In 1889, due to corruption and mismanagement, the Government of India stripped the Maharaja of his powers, establishing a council to govern the State for five years. The judicial member of the council oversaw civil and criminal matters. However, in 1905, powers were restored to Maharaja Pratap Singh, albeit under strict control from the Government of India.

In 1921, the existing High Court was retained as the highest Court of Appeal and Revision. Later, in January 1922, the Shri Pratap Reforms Regulation reconstituted the High Court with appointed judges.

Following Maharaja Pratap Singh’s death in 1925, Maharaja Hari Singh succeeded him and in 1928, established the High Court of Judicature Jammu and Kashmir State, appointing Lala Kunwar Sain as its first Chief Justice.
