Historically, the town was initially under the control of Jogis. Subsequently, Rathor Rajputs ruled the town and its adjacent areas. Narnaul’s history is intertwined with the Sur-Afghans, as Sher Shah Suri’s grandfather, Ibrahim Khan, was associated with the town. After the Second Battle of Panipat, Akbar granted the Jagir to Shah Quli Khan Mahram, who played a role in arresting Hemu, the renowned warrior general of Rewari.

During Akbar’s reign, Narnaul housed a mint (Taksal), and Akbar himself visited to reform the mint along with Raja Todar Mal and Khawaja Shah Mansur. Birbal, one of Akbar’s Navratans, also frequented Narnaul, and Birbal’s Chatta stands as a reminder of his visits.

In the era of Aurangzeb, a revolt by Satnami Sadhus against Muslim Jagirdars resulted in a serious communal riot in Narnaul. The Satnamis fought against the Nawab of Narnaul, Taherbeg, and eventually killed him.

Following the disintegration of the Mughal empire, Narnaul witnessed a series of transitions. The Thakur of Jaipur briefly annexed Narnaul, but it soon fell into the hands of the French General, Do-Boigne. Later, Murtza Khan Bharaich took over the Jagirdari of Narnaul. In 1857, during the First War of Indian Independence, Abdur Rahman, Nawab of Jhajjar and a descendant of Murtza Khan, led a revolt against the British. After the Battle of Narnaul, he and his compatriots were hanged.

Narnaul, the main town of Mohindergarh district, traces its origins back to the Mahabharata era as Nar Rashtra, according to legend. Another legend suggests that it is approximately 900 years old, where lions roamed freely in the surrounding jungles, earning the town the name Naharnaul, meaning “Fear of Lions.” Another legend attributes the town’s name, Narlaun, to Raja Launkaran, who named it after his wife.
