On 14 August 1967, the undivided Darrang District and Sessions Judge Court was inaugurated by the Honorable Mr. Justice S. K. Dutta, the then Chief Justice of the Honorable Gauhati High Court. Mr. U. N. Rajkhowa was appointed as the first District and Sessions Judge of Darrang District. On 31 October 1985, Darrang District was divided into two parts: Sonitpur District and Darrang District.
Present Position Regarding Court’s Accommodation Existing Court Buildings in Tezpur: Currently, there are two Court Buildings in Tezpur Sub-Division. One is the New R.C.C. Court Building, and the other is the Old Assam-Type Court Building. The new R.C.C. Court Building was inaugurated by the former Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court, Honorable Mr. Justice A. K. Goel, on 9 February 2013. It accommodates the courts and offices of the District and Sessions Judge, the Additional District and Sessions Judge No.1, the Additional District and Sessions Judge No.2, Civil Judge and Assistant Sessions Judge, Munsiff No.1, and Munsiff No.2, respectively. The Old Assam-Type Court Building houses the Courts and offices of the Chief Judicial Magistrate, the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate (S), and other Judicial Magistrates. Additionally, it has a Medical Clinic and a Conference room.
Existing Court Building in Biswanath Chariali: There is a two-storied RCC building at Biswanath Chariali Sub-Divisional Judicial Court accommodating all three Courts, namely,
(1) Additional District and Sessions Judge (FTC)
(2) Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate (M)
(3) Munsiff -cum- Judicial Magistrate 1st Class.
New Court Building in Gohpur: The Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate (M) Court building was inaugurated by the Honorable Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court on 23 July 2014, in the building “Swahid Bhawan” at Gohpur. Presently, the said building accommodates the Courts of
(1) Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate (M) and
(2) Munsiff -cum- Judicial Magistrate 1st Class.
