Nabarangpur was established as a separate revenue district on 2 October 1992, which was earlier a sub-division of Koraput. The District & Sessions Court at Nabarangpur was inaugurated on 22 October 2011 by Hon’ble Chief Justice V. Gopala Gowda. Shri Bibhu Prasad Routray was appointed as the first District Judge. The initial court facilities included the S.D.J.M.
Court was established in 1986, followed by the Sub-Judge Court in 1992 and the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in 1993. The Additional District Judge Court, originally opened in 2001, was upgraded to the District Judge Court in 2011. Other courts including Special Judicial Magistrate, Assistant Sessions Judge (STC) and District Mediation Centre were added later. Free legal aid clinics and a front office with appointed advocates provide legal aid to the public.
