Chittorgarh, also known as Chittor, Chittaur, or Chitorgarh, is a historic city and municipality located in the Rajasthan state of western India. Situated on the banks of the Berach River, a tributary of the Banas, Chittorgarh serves as the administrative headquarters of the Chittorgarh District. It was once the capital of the Sisodia Dynasty of Mewar. The district was later bifurcated, with a new district named Pratapgarh formed, which included portions of the Udaipur district. Chittorgarh is also known for its scenic beauty, being located near the Gambhiri and Berach rivers.

The city is renowned for its iconic Chittorgarh Fort, the largest fort in the region, which has been a symbol of courage and sacrifice. The fort has witnessed several sieges, with the Rajput warriors fiercely defending it. On three occasions, Jauhar (self-immolation) was committed by women and children, led by Rani Padmini and later by Rani Karnavati, to protect their honor. The fort also holds the legacy of legendary warriors like Gora and Badal, who fought valiantly against Alauddin Khalji’s invasion in 1303 AD. The sacrifices of Jaimal and Phata in 1568 AD during the battle with the Mughals were so significant that Emperor Akbar honored them by installing their statues in the Agra Fort. The fort and city also have strong associations with the saint-poet Meera, making Chittorgarh a center of both historical and spiritual importance.
