Keonjhar District was officially established as a separate district on 1 January 1948. However, the Keonjhar Judgeship was formed much later, after being separated from Mayurbhanj Judgeship on 28th February 1982. This Judgeship is surrounded by Mayurbhanj and Bhadrak Judgeships to the east, and Dhenkanal and Sundargarh Judgeships to the west. It is located approximately 200 kilometers from the High Court of Orissa.
The Keonjhar Judgeship includes six sub-stations, located in Anandapur, Ghasipura, Hatadihi, Champua, Telkoi, and Barbil. The first District Judge to preside over this Judgeship was Sri Sachita Nanda Das. Initially, the court operated out of the Collectorate building in Keonjhar. However, it was later shifted to a newly constructed building on 21 April 2004.
