Rampur District, located between latitudes 28°25’N and 29°10’N, and longitudes 78°0’E and 69°0’E, covers an area of 2,367 sq. km in Uttar Pradesh‘s Moradabad Division. It shares borders with Udham Singh Nagar to the north, Bareilly to the east, Moradabad to the west, and Badaun to the south. The district has an elevation of 192 meters in the north and 166.4 meters in the south. Well-connected by road and rail, it is 302 km east of the state capital and 185 km west of the national capital. The nearest airport is in Lucknow. According to the 2011 census, the population is 2.33 million.

Rampur was an independent state before India’s independence. It was founded by Nawab Ali Muhammad Khan in 1737. The territory, initially lost to the Nawab of Oudh, was regained after assisting Ahmad Shah Durrani in his invasion. The state of Rampur was established, with its administration under the Nawab. After India’s independence, Rampur merged with the United Provinces in 1950. The District Court of Rampur was established in 1949, and today, there are 21 courts in the district, with 35 District Judges appointed to date.
