The establishment of civil courts in Jaunpur dates back to 1857, with Munsif and Sadar Civil Judge courts originally being in the city. In 1770, when the Nawab of Benares ceded the province to the East India Company, only revenue officials and the city Kotwal handled judicial matters, until 1788, when Duncan appointed a judge and magistrate for Jaunpur, with appeals to lie in Varanasi. In 1795, a district court consisting of a civil judge and local munsifs replaced the local courts.

A provincial appeals court in Varanasi, which visited Jaunpur twice a year, became a regular circuit court in 1797. Following the separation of the judiciary from the executive in 1967 and the Code of Criminal Procedure of 1974, Jaunpur’s judiciary now operates under a District Judge, aligned with the Allahabad High Court, handling both civil and criminal cases and having the power to award the death penalty.
