Mangan is the headquarters of North Sikkim and is about 65 km from the state capital Gangtok. This district is the largest among the four districts of Sikkim. The district headquarters is situated about 2,000 feet (610 m) above sea level. The area of the Northern District is 4,226 km². North Sikkim is the seventh least populous district in the country. North Sikkim had a population of 43,709, of which 24,730 were males and 18,979 were females. Mangan is famous as the cardamom capital of the world. North Sikkim is divided into two sub-divisions, namely Chungthang and Mangan.
