The district came under the control of the Western Board of Revenue on 26 March 1819, marking the beginning of its judicial structure. A court was established in Allahabad in 1831, and by 1856, a Civil and Sessions Judge was appointed in Shahjahanpur. Initially, the District and Sessions Judge held court in Badaun, while Munsif judges sat in Shahjahanpur. The District Judge’s office was formally mentioned before 1857.

During the First War of Independence, a clerk of the “Kachehari” was killed. The Civil Court building, constructed in 1885, is a remarkable example of colonial architecture. Today, the district has 46 sanctioned courts, with 30 in operation, including new outlying courts in Tilhar, Puwaya, and Jalalabad.
