Kushinagar, historically identified as Kusavati in the pre-Buddha period and Kushinara in the post-Buddha era, was once the capital of the Malla republic. It was part of several ancient empires, including the Maurya, Shunga, Kushana, Gupta, Harsha, and Pala dynasties. The city faded into obscurity after the 12th century, with Padrauna being ruled by Madan Singh, a Rajput adventurer, in the 15th century. Modern Kushinagar gained prominence in the 19th century through archaeological excavations by Alexander Cunningham and C.L. Carlyle, revealing significant Buddhist relics.

Kushinagar became a separate district of Uttar Pradesh on 13 May 1994. The foundation of the new District Court building at the Headquarters was laid on 9 May 2004 by Hon’ble Justice Tarun Chatterjee, Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court. The building was inaugurated on 11 February 2008 by Hon’ble Justice Hemant Laxman Gokhale. The District Headquarters is located at Ravindra Nagar Dhoos, approximately 4 kilometers from Padrauna, while the Outlying Court in Kasia is 15 kilometers away.
