The Pratapgarh District Court was inaugurated on 12 April 1969 by the esteemed Mr. Justice Shashikant Verma, who was then the Administrative Judge of the Hon’ble High Court of Allahabad. The first District Judge of Pratapgarh was Mr. Suresh Chandra, and currently, the District & Sessions Judge is Sri Abdul Shahid, who has held the position since 8 May 2023. Pratapgarh is located on the Allahabad-Faizabad main road, 39 km from Sultanpur and 61 km from Allahabad. It is one of the older districts of Uttar Pradesh, established in 1858, and sits at an elevation of 137 meters above sea level. The district is bordered by Sultanpur in the north, Allahabad in the south, Jaunpur in the east, and Fatehpur and Rae Bareli in the west and northwest, respectively.

Pratapgarh is home to the revered Belha Devi Temple, from which the city of Bela derives its name. This temple is located about 3 km from the district headquarters, along the Sai River. Another significant site is the Bhakti Mandir in Mangarh, Kunda, known as the Abode of Devotion. This divine temple was established by Jagad Guru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj and is situated approximately 62 km from the district headquarters. The district has two outlying courts: one in Kunda, inaugurated in April 1993, and another in Lalganj-Ajhara, inaugurated in 2012. Additionally, a Gramnayalaya is located in Patti. The district is divided into five tehsils: Sadar, Lalganj, Kunda, Raniganj, and Patti.
