The name “Hardoi” is believed to have evolved from “Haridrohi,” a term meaning “anti to God.” According to Hindu lore, the area was once ruled by King Hiranyakashipu, who declared himself divine and sought worship. His son, Prahlad, resisted, and to protect him, Lord Vishnu incarnated as Narasimha, a form neither human nor animal, to defeat Hiranyakashipu. Some scholars suggest “Hardoi” originates from “Haridwaya,” meaning “two gods,” honoring Vishnu’s incarnations as Narasimha and Vamana in the region.

Located in Uttar Pradesh’s Lucknow division, Hardoi has five tehsils—Hardoi, Shahabad, Sawayajpur, Bilgram, and Sandila—spanning 19 blocks, 1101 gram sabhas, and 1983 villages. Bordered by Shahjahanpur and Lakhimpur Kheri to the north and Lucknow and Unnao to the south, its proximity to historic sites like Nemisharayan makes Hardoi culturally significant.
