When the state of Nagaland was inaugurated, the people strongly demanded protection of their traditional laws from the Indian legal system. Therefore, the Constitution of India contains a special provision, Article 371(A), which protects Naga customary laws. However, as Indian governance systems developed, it became clear that Naga customary laws were inadequate to meet the needs of the people. Therefore, the establishment of the Circuit Bench of the Gauhati High Court at Kohima on 1 December 1972 was intended to bridge this gap. The golden jubilee of the establishment of the Kohima Bench was celebrated on 1 December 2022, marking 50 years of its establishment. Nagaland consists of a total of 11 District Courts.
