In the Kingdom of Cochin, Desavazhis and Naduvazhis settled disputes based on customary law, while serious cases were handled by the monarch. In 1812, under Colonel Munro’s Diwanship, graded law courts were established for the first time in Cochin. The first Subordinate Courts were set up at Trichur (Thrissur) and Tripunithura. On 1 November 1956, the District & Sessions Court in Thrissur was formed after Kerala’s statehood. Initially, the courts operated from Chembukkavu, but in 1957, they moved to the newly inaugurated Civil Station building.
The new District Court complex, inaugurated on 18 November 2017 by Justice Kurian Joseph, is a five-story building in Ayyanthole. It has 16 court halls and modern amenities such as computerized systems, intercom, case display monitors, water purifiers, and elevators. There is also a separate building for the ADR Centre, Bar Association, and government offices. The court complex complies with international standards for court facilities.
