Kollam, also known as Quilon, is an ancient port town situated on the coast of the Laccadive Sea in Kerala. Historically known as Desinganadu, Kollam has enjoyed a long-standing reputation as a commercial hub, dating back to the times of the Phoenicians and Romans.
The city thrived due to its flourishing trade with China and was recognized by the famous traveler Ibn Battuta as one of the five major ports he encountered during his 24 years of exploration in the 14th century. Later, Kollam became the capital of the progressive rulers of Desinganadu. When Travancore and Cochin merged in 1949, Kollam was one of the three revenue divisions in the newly formed state.
