Dewas became a civil district in 1970, the District Court initially operated from an old building on the Agra-Bombay Road until 1996. This building also housed the Revenue Court and the Collector’s Office, which continued to operate nearby. In 1996, the District Court moved to a new building, which now houses 13 judicial officers, including the District and Sessions Judge, four Additional District Judges, and eight Magistrates.

The first District Judge was Mr. B.B.L. Shrivastava (1969–73). A notable case was the State of Madhya Pradesh v. Sarnam Singh (1993), in which the court awarded a death sentence to two accused of honor killing. The Dewas District Courts have had prominent lawyers such as Mr. A.S. Patwardhan, Mr. D.S. Patwardhan, and Mr. Babu Rao Sharma, who made significant contributions despite not being law graduates. A mediation center and legal aid services operate from the court complex, which assists the economically disadvantaged in getting justice.
