Before 1818, Seoni was part of the Marathi Empire under the Bhonsle rulers of Nagpur. During their reign, justice was administered by kamavisdars (riot court officials) and zamindar patels. Kamavisdars either made decisions themselves or referred cases to Nyaya Panchayats. Patels did not have authority over civil matters, which were often settled by village elders, although there was no formal procedure for this.

In 1818, Seoni came under the East India Company. From 1818 to 1861, civil court judges handled economic matters. In 1861, when the British formed the Central Provinces, the Code of Civil Procedure of 1859 was introduced. New courts and posts, including deputy commissioners and tehsildars, were established. In 1872, the district boundaries were redefined, with villages being reallocated between Seoni, Nagpur, and Balaghat districts. Only the Seoni and Lakhnadon tehsils were reorganized within the Seoni district.
