Viluppuram District, originally part of South Arcot District, became a separate district on 30 September 1993. Its history mirrors that of Cuddalore, with the Cholas ruling from the 1st to 4th centuries, followed by the Pallavas. The Chola Empire was revived by Vijayalaya Chola but later ended with the rise of Jatavarman Sundara Pandya I in 1251. The region saw Muslim domination from 1334 to 1378 before coming under the Vijayanagara Empire, and later, the Nayaks. In 1677, Shivaji took the Gingee area, which then passed under Mughal and British control until India’s independence in 1947.

The Principal District Court of Viluppuram was part of South Arcot District until it was bifurcated in 1993, as per G.O.Ms.NO.997, Home (Courts III) Department. The Viluppuram District Court was inaugurated on 27 November 1993.
