Sivagangai District, located in Tamil Nadu, is bordered by Pudukkottai District to the northeast, Tiruchirappalli to the north, Ramanathapuram to the southeast, Virudhunagar to the southwest, and Madurai to the west. It was carved out of the composite Ramanathapuram district as per G.O. MS. No. 1122 dated 6 July 1984 and began functioning as a separate district on 15 March 1985 under G.O. MS. No. 346 dated 8 March 1985.

The District Court of Sivagangai was established on 28 August 1992 and has been operational since. The District Munsif Court, Sivagangai, is over 175 years old, while the Sub Court has a history spanning more than 150 years. The Principal District Munsif Court, Manamadurai, is over 125 years old. The Chief Judicial Magistrate Court shifted from Devakottai on 19 April 1980, and the Judicial Magistrate No. II Court, both hold histories of over 75 years.
